Design Museum - Alain Aldrige in conversation

Alan Aldridge will be talking about his influences, motivation, and achievements. This is an opportunity to hear Alan talk about his career to date with reference to his iconic designs for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Hard Rock Café and Penguin Books amongst others. There will also be an opportunity to view the block buster retrospective Alan Aldridge - The Man with Kaleidoscope Eyes before and after the talk.

Friday 31 October 6pm – 10pm £5 in advance, £8.50 on the door As night draws its curtain, Stars, those bright sequins appear, Design Overtime makes it certain That the Butterfly Ball, most wonderful, is here. You are cordially invited to attend the Design Museum’s very own masked ball this Halloween and enjoy an evening of Butterfly Ball readings, nature slide-shows, gallery talks, music and dancing. It’s the perfect way to view the Alan Aldridge exhibition. Those found not to be masked upon arrival will be whisked to our dressing room to create your own disguise. Mask making, make up make-over’s, etiquette training, and of course dance lessons will make you look the part. A prize will be awarded for the most creatively attired.

ALESSI DESIGN INTERVIEWS

Monday 24 November 7.15pm £15 Alberto Alessi will be in conversation with Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic. Alessi will be responding to footage from a selection of the ‘Design Interviews’, a series of DVDs produced by Museo Alessi, co-edited by Museo Alessi and Edizioni Corraini and directed by Anna Pitscheider. Featured in the short films are five masters of design - Andrea Branzi, Achille Castiglioni, Alessandro Mendini, Richard Sapper and Ettore Sottsass.

A festive night of shopping, music, and making Friday 5 December 6pm – 10pm £5 in advance Get all your Christmas shopping done early in the Design Museum Shop. Buy it then wrap it in our special designer-wrapping workshop. Also, create fabulous cards, gift tags and decorations using a wide range of provided materials. Satisfy those creative needs and festive chores all with a backdrop of seasonal melody and Christmas cheer.

Friday 5 December 7.15pm £15 How has a listings magazine managed to influence and stimulate the development of London’s design scene over the past 40 years ? Swinging 60s, groovy 70s, upwardly mobile 80s, new Brit 90s and the smooth naughties, London has also managed to adapt but retain its identity. This lively debate will be discussing the changes and similarities between generations of designers working in the city spanning the last 40 years and how a greater accessibility to cultural activity created by publications such as Time Out has influenced these developments.

- Design Cities Public Debate

Monday 15 December 7.15pm £15 The Design Museum’s current exhibition Design Cities argues that seven cities have each enjoyed a “moment” when their particular economic, cultural and geo-political stars have aligned to have a transformative effect on the history of design. In this debate the British Council, and the Design Museum have come together to examine the notion of ‘Design City’, and look to where this title might be applied in the future. PENGUIN COVERS THEN AND NOW

Monday 12 January 7.15pm £15 Over the decades Penguin has sustained a reputation for generating innovative and influential cover designs as seen in the work by Alan Aldridge from the 1960s. In this cross generational discussion early Penguin designers and the former Penguin New Classics editor Judith Burnley will talk about the factors behind their particular Penguin heyday to be compared with recent achievements and future direction described by current Art Director Jim Stoddart. THE JOY OF CLAY

Friday 23 January 6pm -10pm £5 in advance For the perfect winter interlude, celebrate your love of ceramics at the Design Museum’s clay medley. Informal talks and hands on workshops to inspire the pottery enthusiast, and a last chance to see Patricia Urquiola’s Purely Porcelain exhibition.

DESIGNING CLAY

Friday 23 Jan 7.15pm £15 Ceramics is a term that spans many design and manufacturing processes. In a discipline which is often perceived as a sole pursuit is there a need to nurture relationships between the creative individual and the ceramics industry ? Spurred by the current exhibition of work designed by Patricia Urquiola for Rosenthal, this discussion will bring together leading figures from various places in the ceramics spectrum including industry, design, and education. The panel, which will include Jerwood prize winner Richard Slee, will discuss various topics relevant to both the ‘ceramist’ and ‘manufacturer’ with opportunity for lively audience Q&A.
